This section covers the replacement procedures for trunk and tailgate lifter
supports. It covers the 140, 164, 240, 260, 740, 760, 940, 960 and S90,V90.
The parts described here can be purchased in the following VLVworld.com
catalogue pages:
Trunk and tailgate hydraulic supports will inevitably fail with time because
the gas/oil mix inside leaks out with the years. Usually it will start falling
down by itself on colder days in the fall. While a broken hockey stick or a
broom handle will keep the trunk open, replacement struts provide more convience
and are easy to install. We recommend changing both sides at the same time,
however it is possible to change only one to save money. To figure out wich
side is bad you must remove both lifters and compress them manually using your
body weight and the ground. If one is definitely easier to compress then it
should be changed. It is not always easy to figure out wich side is bad, both
struts can still have quite a lot of pressure left inside even if the tailgate/trunk
will not stay up. Note: the 140 wagons and 240 wagons up to 1978 have only one
lifter, all other models have 2 lifters.
7.3.1
Station Wagon Tailgate Lifters Supports
- Support the tailgate to keep it open, have an assistant or use a broom
handle.
- Remove the spring clips (pry off with a flat head screwdriver if required)
at both ends. Some model are pressed in place on the car side, give
it a blow with the palm of your end to release it
- Keep all hardware since the clips and ball joint ends are not always
supplied with the replacement. Dont throw away your old ones before
receiving the replacements.
- Detach strut from vehicle and put the new ones in starting with the
mount on the car side. Then lift the tailgate all the way up and mount
on the tailgate end, put the retaining clip.

Sedan Trunk Lifters Supports 140, 164, 240, 260
Sedan Trunk lifter Replacement
- The lifter is not retained by any clip, it holds on by its own pressure.
Look at the picture on the right, at the end of the tube you can see
what looks like the head of a rivet. This is part of the lifter itself
and cannot be undone. The hinge has a V shaped slot and the lifter pushes
in the V.
- To remove the lifter you must manually compress it enough to release
one of the ends from the hinge or the back seat attachment. The rear
end, closer to the back seat, can be compressed using a pry bar, get
in the trunk to do it. Make sure you have an assistant to hold the trunk
because once it releases the trunk lid will fall on you and you may
be trapped inside
- Another technique is to lower the trunk lid a bit, which compresses
the lifters, then block the lifter in the compressed position using
a piece of 2x4 and your own body weight or a pry bar. Have assistant
lift the trunk lid quickly to release the lifter while you keep it compressed.
VOLVO calls for a special tool SVO2739 wich is a C clamp that keeps
the lifter compressed in the same manner.
- To put the new lifter you must do the reverse, compress it enough
such that it will engage in the V shaped slot on the trunk hinge.
- The proper technique documented by VOLVO for inserting the lifter
calls for a special tool SVO2744 wich is a vise to compress the new
lifter, then re-use clamp SVO2739 mentionned above to insert the lifter
on the car. Those tool are not commonly available and used by mechanics,
it can be done with a pry bar and some strength .

open with a flat head screwdriver if required, then slide off. Keep
the clip, the replacement may not include it.
- Detach the rear end of the strut from the car, it is a hook that snaps
in place, it will come off with a small upward blow.

Emblems on Trunk
To remove the emblems from the vehicle heat the area with a hair dryer
and 'floss' behind the emblem with a thin wire. Carefully clean off the
remaining residue. Use a specially suited glue to reapply the emblem.
