The VOLVO 960 is a rear wheel drive car introduced in 1992 as a successor of the VOLVO 760 model. The 960 is the last rear wheel drive VOLVO sold in North America, ending in 1998 with the S90/V90 version. The 960 was the most luxurious VOLVO model in the 1990's and the list of standard equipment is long. Plenty of chrome, formal body colors, leather interior, the 960 came in only one version: fully loaded!

Up to 1994 the design of the VOLVO 960 is mostly the same as its predecessor, the VOLVO 760, the trunk design beeing the main difference. The 960 wagon and 760 wagon are almost identical. In 1995 a major facelift was done on the 960 model with an all new front end that made it look like the 850 series. This seemed to please the buyers because the sales numbers almost tripled after the 1995 facelift! In 1998 VOLVO made a few more cosmetic changes and put a new badge on the 960 sedan who became the S90, and the 960 wagon became known as the V90. VOLVO sold 124377 960 sedans and 46564 960 wagons, those numbers include the S90 and V90 sales.

All 960's have an automatic transmission and the B6304 engine with 6 cylinders, 3 liters, double camshaft, 24 Valves, 201HP output. At the same time VOLVO was selling the more popular (in the sense of cheaper and less luxurious) VOLVO 940 model. The 940 and 960 share a lot of components. Important differences are the engines and the fact that the 960 sedan's have an independant rear suspension, while the 940 sedan have a rigid rear axle. The suspension on the 940 and 960 wagons are the same.
