The VOLVO 940 is a rear wheel drive car introduced in 1991, as a sucessor of the popular VOLVO 740 model, and it was produced until 1995. A total of 216884 4 door sedans and 160181 station wagons were sold. The 940 was certainly not a revolution, it was more of a facelift of the 740 model, who had itself inherited its engine from the 240 series. On the sedan the trunk design and taillights were different from the 740's. The rear end of the station wagon is the same on 740's and 940's. The dash of the 940 is inherited from the 760 model. Most parts are interchangeable between the 740 and 940 models. The VOLVO 940 was available in different trim levels as listed in the production tables below. The base model is the VOLVO 940 GLwith the B4230F engine, 4 cylinders, 8 valves, and 114HP. It is a rather small engine for a big car. The B230F engine was first introduced on the VOLVO 240 series in 1985. The 940 GLE 16 Valve has the B234F engine, 4 cylinder, 16 valves, dual camshaft, with 153HP. The 940 GLE 16 valve was produced in 1991 and 1992 only. The top of the line in terms of power and performance is the 940 TURBO with the B230FT Turbocharged, 4 cylinder engine, with an output of 160HP. I recommend the VOLVO 940 to everyone because it is based on traditional VOLVO rear wheel drive technology inherited from a long line of ancestors like the 140, 240 and 740 models. Parts are easy to find and will get easier as used parts become available in the future. Properly maintained, those cars last long, keep their value and will find a next buyer.
