The VOLVO 850 sedan was introduced in 1993 and was the first VOLVO imported to North America with the front wheel drive technology. Note that VOLVO was producing the 440 models in Europe with front wheel drive prior to the 850, so this technology was not completely new for VOLVO. For the American consumer this break with the long VOLVO tradition and proven reliability of rear wheel drive was a big change. The 850 wagon was introduced in 1994. Both the sedan and wagon were available in different trim packages described below. All models have a 5 cylinder engine. The base engine is a 2.5L normally aspirated (not Turbo), 152 HP, with 2 valves per cylinder, sold in Canada only. In USA the base engine is a 2.5L normally aspirated, 168 HP, with 4 valves per cylinder, 20 valves total. The Turbo model's engine is a 2.3L, 20 valves, giving out 222 HP. The T5R and R models have the same engine, with different computer chip settings, giving 240HP (250 HP for cars with standard manual transmission). Check the tables below for more information on available models and engines. Quite a few problems were found on the 1993 models and a new re-designed model was introduced in 1994. I recommend avoiding the 850 sedan 1993 and early 1994 models for this reason. Differences include headlights, bumpers, wheels have 4 nuts in 1993 vs 5 nuts from 1994 on, and much more. The car remained mostly the same from 1994 to 1997. In 1998 the VOLVO 850 was followed by the VOLVO S70 (sedan) and V70 (wagon) models which are mostly the same car with a different badge. The S70 and V70 are built on the same chassis and use the same drive train and mechanical components has the 850. However the VOLVO styling department made over 1800 changes to the car body "giving the 70-Series a graceful nature and an aggressive new stance. The rounded grille, distinctive V-shaping of the hood and subtly softer body lines are only the most noticeable changes". I am sorry for the VOLVO stylist but before reading those lines I hadn't noticed the body was that different! "The new style is apparent in a more steeply raked windshield and in new sheet metal that carries the theme to a rounder tail. The S70 sedan has virtually all new body panels...". The V70 is not that much different from an 850 wagon. The rear brake light is now mounted on the top edge of the rear glass and uses LED. The V70 was re-designed in 2001 and the same year the S70 was replaced by the S60. The 2001 and later V70's and XC70's are built on a different chassis from the 850. The GLT uses the same engine as the base model from 1993 to 1996. In 1997 the GLT got a special low pressure Turbo engine of 2.5L and 190HP.. It is the first 4 wheel drive model sold by VOLVO in North America. Available only has a station wagon, the car has an higher ground clearance and black plastic trims and bumpers making it look a bit like an SUV. It was available in Canada in 1997 only, the 850 AWD was followed by the V70 AWD available in the USA. See V70 AWD for more information.
