The VOLVO 740 series was introduced in 1984 to North America, 2 years after the VOLVO 760 started on the market. The VOLVO 740 is always equipped with a 4 cylinder engine, either normally aspirated (B230F) or Turbocharged (B230FT). The VOLVO 760 was available with a V6 or 4 cylinder Turbocharged only. Aside from the engine and cosmetic differences, the VOLVO 740 and 760 are similar cars and shares the same body, suspension, brakes and more.

The VOLVO 740 came in three different trim levels: 740 GL, 740 GLE and 740 TURBO. The 740 GL is the base model, the 740 GLE the luxurious models (with chrome trims) and the 740 TURBO beeing the sportier of the three (with black trims). In 1991 a Special Edition model was sold called the 740 SE. See more details about the different options in the tables below.

During it's 9 years in production from 1984 to 1992, over 1 million sedans and wagons were sold. In 1992 it was replaced by the VOLVO 940, with few changes in the interior and exterior designs for the sedan, mainly the trunk design and instrument cluster. The VOLVO 740 and 940 wagons are almost identical cars. Check out the photo album for a description of the various changes made to the body during their production.

We recommend the VOLVO 740 series to everyone because it is a reliable car, based on traditional VOLVO rear wheel drive technology inherited from a long line of predecessors such as the 140 and 240 series. The VOLVO 740 is easy to maintain and repair, parts are easy to find, and properly maintained those cars will last long, keep their value and will find a buyer.

VOLVO 740 TURBO - 1984 1992 The VOLVO 740 Turbo has a 4 cyl Turbocharged engine of 160 hp, black side trims, 15 inch or larger mag wheels, firm suspension, seats made of a mix of velour on the center and leather on the outside, and other sport options. According to VOLVO ads it will rocket you from standing point to legal speed limt in 6.7 seconds, faster than a BMW 325e or Audi 5000S Turbo.

VOLVO 740 GL - 1985 1992 The VOLVO 740 GL is the base model, equipped with a 4 cyl engine (not Turbo) of 114 hp, the B230F. Few of them were sold in North America.

VOLVO 740 GLE - 1985 1988 The VOLVO 740 GLE is equipped with a 4 cyl engine (not Turbo) of 114 hp, the B230F, from 1985 to 1988. From 1989 to 1990 the 740 GLE came with a 16 valves engine named the B234F. The side trims on the car are black and chrome with a chrome front grill. Standard equipment includes air conditionner, sun roof (not powered), power windows, radio cassette, power antenna, 14 inch mag wheels. Note that the VOLVO 760 is even more luxurious with power sunroof, power seat, power side view mirrors, bigger sound system.

VOLVO 740 TURBO DIESEL - 1986 1986 The VOLVO 740 Turbo Diesel uses the D24T 6 cyl engine. That engine was used since 1983 on the 760 Diesel. It could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 13 seconds, which made it one of the fastest diesel-powered car of the time. The 740 Turbo Diesel was available only in 1986 in North America.

VOLVO 740 SE - 1991 1991 The VOLVO 740 SE is a Special Edition sold in 1991. It is like the 740 Turbo but came with a body kit with special front spoiler and bumper cover, side skirts, trunk spoiler, rear bumper cover. The B230FT Turbo engine is boosted with a Turbo Plus kit increasing peak power buy allowing more boost pressure.

VOLVO 740 GLE 16 Valves - 1989 1990 The VOLVO 740 GLE 16 Valves has the B234F engine, a 4 cylinder dual camshaft overhead engine. That engine was available in 1989 and 1990 only and has more power, more torque and runs smoother. Other than the engine the 740 GLE 16 Valves are like the 740 GLE described above. The 16 Valves engine is a bit more expensive to maintain. For example changing the timing belt takes more time on a 16 Valves. Aside from the head and timing belt most engine components are the same on the B230F and B234F engines.
